Title: SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR NUCLEAR MERCHANT SHIPS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4316734

Rapidly increasing research and development work on nuclear-powered ships requires study of the safety problems which may arise. The results of a preliminary study which was intended to define the subject and to outline the major considerations involved are summarized. Emphasis is placed on possible directions for developing some safety measures, and on areas which need further attention. The central questions of nuclearship safety concerns unforeseen accidents, with thc accompanying possible release of serious quantities of radioactive fission products and fuel materials. Accidents which may occur in or near contained bodies of water (the smaller seas), harbors and ports, and coastal waters, are of especial interest. The diffusion of fission products from a point source in sea water is considered. A possible means of inhibiting the biological activity of fission products is described. Radioactivity hazards are estimated. (auth)
