Title: A test for solvent quality

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4312667· OSTI ID:4312667

A method was devised to give a measure of the degradation products that appear in the solvent used in the extraction process for the recovery of U and Pu from irradiated material. The method is referred to as the Zirconium Index Test. The value or Z'' number obtained from the test makes it possible to predict the performance of the solvent in the extraction process. The method involves the equilibration of a portion of the solvent with a Zr tracer solution of known concentration and activity. The equilibrated solvent is washed three times with HNO3 and an aliquot is mounted and counted. The activity remaining in the solvent and the known concentration and activity of the tracer are used to calculate the amount of Zr retained by the solvent in moles per billion liters. This value is the Z'' number.
