Title: Whole body counting using a twin-detector scanner

Journal Article · · Australas. Radiol., v. 17, no. 4, pp. 464-469

A technique of whole-body counting using a modified profile scarmer is described for the measurement of iron absorption using /sup 59/Fe. The reaults show that, in addition to its obvious advantages to the patient such as absence of fecal collection and minimal number of out-patient visits, whole-body counting is a simple and convenient technique and is of satisfactory accuracy. Iron absorption was studied in 12 male and 8 female subjects. The average percent retention for 10 normal subjects was from 8.4 to 22.5. The other eight patients studied had all previously undergone splenectomy as part of treatment for hereditary spherocytosis and their average percent retention was found to be 28.3 plus or minus 18.7 (I.S.D.) with a range of 8.7 to 60.0.
