Ag-In-Cd COULD REPLACE Hf FOR PWR CONTROL RODS

The resuits of tests made on a silver--15 wt. % indium --5 wt. % cadnium alloy indicate that it could replace hafnium in control rods of future pressurizedwater reactor cores, The effectiveness of the alloy for neutron capture is 99% that of Hf, and the decrease is small over the core life. It has good corrosion reslstance. The alloy has sufficient yield strength to resist scramming loads of PWR micontrol rods. There is no change in appearance and mechanical strength improves with irradiation. The melting, forging, extrusion, and machining are readily performed. The alloy would be preferable to hafnium because of greater availability and lower cost. (J.S.R.)
