Title: EXCITED STATES OF Cu$sup 64$ AND Cu$sup 6$$sup 6$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D

The Cu/sup 63/(d,p)Cu/sup 64/ and Cu/sup 65/(d,p)Cu/sup 66/ reactions were investigated through studies of the proton groups arising from the deuteron bombardment of thin targets of isotopically enriched copper. The incident deuteron beam, with energies ranging from 6.00 to 6.55 Mev, was obtained from an electrostatic accelerator, and the protons were analyzed with a high-resolution magnetic spectrograph. In the region of excitation up to 3.80 Mev, sixtyfive excited states in Cu/sup 64/ and fifty-five in in Cu /sup 66/ were measured. The Q values fur the transitions to the ground states of Cu/sup 64/ and Cu/sup 66/ are 5.691 plus or minus 0.008 Mev and 4.832 plus or minus 0.008 Mev, respectively. (auth) The total absorption in carbon of the gamma rays from the T/sup 3/(p, gamma )He/sup 4/ reaction was measured as a function of proton energy and hence gamma-ray energy. As the gamma-ray energy was varied from 20.3 to 20.8 Mev, the total absorption cross section in carbon varied smoothly from 315 plus or minus 5 to 324 plus or minus 6 milllbarns. The resolution was better than 70 kev and the sensitivity sufficient to detect narrow resonances of more than 0.8 Mev-millibarns integrated cross section, but no structure was observed although photonuclear resonances have been reported in this region.
