Title: FABRICATION OF INFRARED TRANSMITTING MATERIALS BY HOT PRESSING TECHNIQUES. Period covered: April 1, 1957 to March 31, 1958

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4279311

The fabrication of infrared-transmitting materials by hot-pressing techniques was stiidied. BaF/sub 2/ was used as a model material. The temperatures studied ranged from 600 to l225 deg C and the pressures from l500 to 8000 psi. The equipnrent used to obtain these conditions is described. The effects of various hot-pressing atmospheres including nitrogen, helium, argon, and carbon dioxide were investigated. A study was carried out to rdentify the impurities present and to study their effects. (auth)
