HIGH ENERGY NEUTRONS IN A COLLIMATED BEAM FROM THE LOS ALAMOS FAST PLUTONIUM REACTOR
Estimates of the excitution energies of fission fragments suggested that it would be useful to search for an upper limit to the neutron energy spectrum. The work reported was undertaken to extend the fission spectrum as far as was permitted by the beam intensity available from the Los Alamos Fast Plutonium Reactor. A secondary objective was to improve the accuracy of the spectrum reponted in Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Rcport LA-718. Thc spectrum reported there was determined from fissions induced by thernmal neutrons. Neutrons were observed in the energy range of 24 to 25 Mcv, implying fragmcnt excitation energies greater than 30 Mev. In the spectrum no change of slope is evident, suggesting that fragments of still higher excitation are reasonably abundant. (auth)
