Structural and magnetic properties of melt-spun rare earth-iron-boron alloys

Intrinsic coercivities and energy products as large as 20 kOe and 14 MGOe, respectively, have been observed in Nd Fe-B alloys prepared by melt-spinning. X-ray diffraction work indicates that the materials are comprised primarily of a new, tetragonal, rare earth-iron-boron phase. The precise stoichiometry and detailed crystal structure of this phase have been determined by Rietveld analyses of neutron powder diffraction data. The compound is R{sub 2}Fe{sub 14}B, having the P4{sub 2}/mnm space group symmetry. The structure contains puckered, hexagonal nets reminiscent of those characterizing hexagonal R-Co magnetic compounds. Magnetic properties of exchange-coupled trilayers of amorphous rare-earth-cobalt alloys

From amorphous thin films from alloys of rare earths (Gd, Sm), yttrium or zirconium with cobalt we have prepared trilayers with very clean interfaces appropriate for the study of magnetic coupling. The sandwiches were typically Y-Co/Gd-Co/Y-Co and Sm-Co/X/Sm-Co{sup {prime}} (X=Gd-Co, Co-Zr, Co). The three individual layers are coupled magnetically by exchange interactions between cobalt moments throughout the entire sample. This coupling associated with the specific properties of the given alloy (magnetic moment, anisotropy, coercivity) leads to ferrimagnetic or ferromagnetic structures of the magnetization of adjacent layers and to novel magnetization processes. Magnetic properties of amorphous rare-earth--cobalt alloys

The magnetic properties of several amorphous alloys prepared by melt spinning have been studied. These comprise alloys of the series Tb/sub 1-x/Co/sub x/, Y/sub 1-x/Co/sub x/ (0.25< or =x< or =0.60), and R/sub 69/Co/sub 31/ (R=La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er). Most of the alloys in which the R component has an orbital momentum were found to exhibit large intrinsic coercive forces at low temperatures. The thermomagnetic history effects studied on several of these alloys have been interpreted in terms of a thermally activated magnetization process.
