ISOTOPIC SOURCES OF SECONDARY RADIATION. Interim Technical Report No. 2 Covering the Period from March 1 to July 1, 1959
During the past year work carried out in this program has included experiments on the x-ray output produced by separated fission product beta sources, the interpretation of such experiments for the effective design of high level secondary x-ray sources, and the design and testing of prototype sources of secondary radiation for specific industrial applications. An analysis is described which provides an improved basis for evaluating beta excitation of secondary radiation. The results are expressed in a convenient formula for photon yield variations with target thickness, when beta sources are used in sandwich, transmission, and reflection geometries, as well as in mixed source- target configurations. Absolute values of photon yield are similariy derived for bremsstrahlung and characteristic x rays as functions of beta source and target material. Tests are reported on the performance of the initial prototype source design. Observations were made on x rays from conical targets surrounding a ""line source"" of Kr/sup 85/i. Further design studies are reported on the possible use of Pm/sup 147/ in high level x-ray sources. (W.D.M.)
