The feasibility of using a water based polymeric barrier system (PBS) for site specific control of contamination was demonstrated by pilot scale field tests at the Feed Materials Production Center (FMPC) and the Savannah River Plant (SRP) during the fall of 1989. Test sections consisting of a wide variety of substrates were selected to demonstrate the use of PBS for specific applications of concern at each site. Data are presented from the extended batch-countercurrent and pilot plant runs on the TBP extraction of Th from mantle grade material. Experiments were carried out to demonstrate an operable proceas for 99.9% recovery of Th, speeification purity and mechanical operability. In addition, both the batch courtercurrert and the pilot plant runs were carried through a very large number of volume changes to assure the attainment of equilibrium conditions. These runs demonstrated conclusively that specifications can be met and that the extraction process using 30% TBP -70% Solvesso as an extractant and HNO/sub 3/ as a salting agent is commercially sound.more » (auth)« less
