Abstract

The instrumentation at the Lid Tank Shielding Facility (LTSF) is described. Drawings or photographs of the gamma-ray, thermal-neutron, and fast- neutron detectors are included, and these detectors are discussed. The methods of detector application at the LTSF are also described, as well as the calibration techniques. The electronics associated with each detector is presented with appropriate references. The range of sensitivity of each detector is also given, along with estimates of the reliability of data from the detection system. (auth)

A calculation predicting the neutron flux in the Bulk Shielding Facility (BSF) on the basis of Lid Tank Shielding Facility (LTSF) data transformed first to a point-to-point kennel and then to the geometry of the BSF reactor was performed in order to check the powers quoted for the two reactors. A discrepancy between the predicted and measured fluxes indicated either that one of the quoted powers was in error or that the geometrical transformations were not properly derived. The SP-2 fission plate in the ORNL Lid Tank Shielding Facility was calibrated on three occasions and these data were used for a retrospective reclibration of SP-1, whose nonuniform geometry made its original, calibration suspect. The three independent calibration experiments performed to determine the fission rate in SP-2 were: thermalneutron flux and utilization; neutron- generation rate; and heat-generation rate. An experimental evaluation of the shield design for the ML-1 mobile reactor was made at the Lid Tank Shielding Facility. Thermal-neutron fluxes, fast-neutron dose rates, and gamma-ray dose rates were measured behind slab mockups of the basic shield design and a number of possible variations. The designs embodied various combinations of lead, Hevimet, stainless steel, boral, water, and aqueous solutions of ammonium pentaborate at two concentrations. Predictions of the thermal neutron fluxes to be expected near the Bulk shielding Reactor were made on the basis of Lid Tank Shielding Facility experimental data transformed to the BSR geometry. The predicted fluxes are higher than the measured fluxes by 12 to 21% for distances closer than 60 cm from the reactor, but they are essentlally in agreement for larger distances. (auth)
