Title: The Mutual Relationship of Spleen and Bone Marrow in Radiation Reactions. III. The Effect of the Spleen on the Reaction Pattern of Bone Marrow After Whole-Body Irradiation (in German)

Journal Article · · Fortschr. Gebiete Rontgenstrahlen u. Nuklearmed.

The peripheral leucocytosis which is observed after splenectomy is unaccompanied by any demonstrable change in the bone marrow. Splenectomised animals, on the other hand, show earlier and more intense regeneration of blood-forming foci after total body radiation than do omentectomised or irradiated control animals. The differences in the phases of marrow regeneration found in totally and partially irradiated animals are discussed. The previously demonstrated release effect of splenectomy on the bone marrow depends on the functional state of the latter. Finally, resting marrow is apparently not affected, or at least not demonstrably so; proliferating marrow shows a marked and prolonged effect.
