Abstract

The measurement of excitation curves of internal conversion pairs and gamma rays coming from the reaction F/sup 19/(p, alpha )O/sup 16/ has allowed determination of the most favorable region of proton bcmbardment energy as regands the production of monopolar pairs with a minimum competition from interfering non-monopolar pairs coming from neighboring levels. A study was made of the yield in monopolar pairs and in pairs of different orders of multipolarity from the reactions Ca/sup 40/(p,p')Ca/sup 40/ and F/sup 19/(p, alpha )O/sup 16/. To determine the yield, the excitation curves of these two reactions were measured in gamma radiation in internal conversion pairs emitted at THETA = 25 and 65 deg . The curves obtained for the Ca/sup 40/ reaction with protons of 4.8 Mev are given. The number of pairs emitted was too small to consider showing radiative corrections. By analysis of the angular distributions of alpha particles from the reactions F/sup 19/(p, alpha )O/sup 16/ leading to the ground state and first excited state of O/sup 16/( alpha /sub 0/ and alpha /sub pi / respectively), virtual levels of the nucleus Ne/sup 20/ with spin and parity (even)/sup +/ snd (odd)/sup -/ were investigated. The Rice Institute magnetic-lens pair spectrometer has been used to detect y radiation from the F/sup 19/(p, alpha )O/sup 16*/ reaction. The gamma -ray transition from the 8.88-Mev level in O/sup 16/ to the ground state and the cascade y from this level to the 13-Mev state have been observed.
