THE PROCESSING OF IRON CYCLOTRON TARGETS IN CONNEXION WITH THE MOSSBAUER EFFECT IN $sup 57$Fe
Sources for studies of the Mossbauer effect in the Fe/sup 57/ 14-kev transition were prepared in the following way: Iron cyclotron targets were bombarded with deuterons and processed by solvent extraction and ion exchange to remove Mn/sup 54/ formed by the Fe/sup 56/ (d, alpha ) reaction and the residual Fe; recovery of Co/sup 57/ was over 90%. A solution of nearly pure Fe/sup 56/ was added to the Co/sup 57/ solution, and the resulting solution evaporated to dryness. The solid was compacted into one end of a Si tube and melted into a spherical bead with 0.3% Si impurity. The bead was rolled between Ni sheets to a 0.002-in. thickness for Mossbauer effect studies. Such sources were found to have a proportion of recoilless radiation, i.e., the narrow Mossbauer line, greater than that from Pound and Rebka's data by a factor of 2; this difference is ascribed to the more uniform Co/sup 57/ atom distribution in the iron lattice and to the negligible line self absorption in a source with small Fe/sup 57/ concentration.
