Intermetallic analysis of the composition and structure of alloys with vamous contents of niobium shows that multicomponent alloys form solid solutions with a NNb metallic base. Microstructures of A-Cr- Mo-Nb- Ni-Ti-W alloys were studied after thermal treatment at 1200 deg C for 200 hours followed by air cooling. Electrode potentials of Ni/sub 3/Nb intermetallics and gamma solid solutions were measured with various electrolytes, and the effects of current on yield and composition are tabulated. The data show that the Ni/sub 3/Nb base compound (phase yield 16.3%) is segregated at + 18 to 0 deg C. Along the side the Ni/sub 3/Nb phase at-8 deg C a solid solution is formed which somewhat increases the phase yield. In all alloys the segregated phase appears as solid solution Ni/ sub 3/Nb with a rhombic crystalline lattice. Considering the crystal radii, it is assumed that Cr (1.28A) atoms replace the Ni (1.24A) and W (1.41A), and Mo (1.40A) atoms replace Nb (1.47A); thus the formula of the complex can be expressed as (Ni, Cr)/sub 3/(Nb, W, Mo). The investigation also establishes the quantity and content of Ni/sub 3/Nb and gamma solution in various alloys. (R.V.J.)
