BOILING POTASSIUM REACTOR FOR SPACE

The development of a boiling potassium-cooled, stainlesssteel reactor is discussed. The objective of the program is to provide an advanced, single-loop, nuclear-powered system with an output in the range from 100to 300 kw(e). It is believed that the stainless steel system will give a specific weight of approximates 30 lb/kw(e) with reactor temperatures of approximates 1500-1600 F. The choice of potassium over Cs or Rb is discussed, and physical properties of K and H/sub 2/O compared for typical boiler conditions are tabulated. (P.C.H.)
