Title: HEAT GENERATION

Abstract

Heat is generated by the utilization of high energy neutrons produced as by nuclear reactions between hydrogen isotopes in a blanket zone containing lithium, a neutron moderator, and uranium and/or thorium effective to achieve multtplicatton of the high energy neutron. The rnultiplied and moderated neutrons produced react further with lithium-6 to produce tritium in the blanket. Thermal neutron fissionable materials are also produced and consumed in situ in the blanket zone. The heat produced by the aggregate of the various nuclear reactions is then withdrawn from the blanket zone to be used or otherwise disposed externally. (AEC)

  • This patent describes a compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) plant cycle which utilizes otherwise wasted compression heat by storing such heat in a thermal energy storage (TES) device for subsequent use for steam generation and injection into compressed air flow before entering a high pressure combustion which expands such compressed air to produce additional power. The cycle consists of the steps: compressing a quantity of air in a low pressure compressor during an off-peak load period; partially extracting thermal energy from the compressed air thereby producing cooled compressed air; storing the extracted thermal energy in the thermal energy storage device;more » further compressing the cooled compressed air in a high pressure compressor; cooling the further compressed air output by the high pressure compressor in an aftercooler; storing the cooled further compressed air output by the aftercooler in an underground air storage during the off-peak load period; producing steam by heating water in the thermal energy storage device during a peak load period; injecting the steam into the compressed air flow before entering the high pressure combustor; combusting fuel in the high pressure combustor to produce a high temperature mixture of the products of the combustion and the steam; and expanding the mixture in a turbine.« less
  • A system for generation of electricity which comprises warming an intermediate heat exchange medium, cooled and liquefied as the result of having been used for warming lng to vaporize, with water or sea water to vaporize, introducing the vaporized intermediate heat medium into a turbine equipped with an electric power generator for driving and using again the intermediate heat medium discharged from the turbine for warming lng to vaporize while the intermediate heat medium discharged from the turbine is contacted with the condensed liquid of the intermediate heat medium with intervention of a packing material.
