THE PRODUCTION OF PIONS BY POSITIVE K MESONS ON NUCLEONS. Thesis
Reactions of K/sup +/ mesons with protons and neutrons were studied. Data were obtained by exposing a 15 in. hydrogen-deuterium bubble chamber to a separated beam of K/sup +/ mesons at momenta of 642 and 810 Mev/c and photographing the tracks in the chamber. Measurement of the bubble chamber tracks yielded data that were used to kinematically separate the events into the reactions. From the separated events the total cross sections were determined. For the K/sup +/p pi /sup -/ events there is a strong forward peaking of the K/ sup +/ and backward peaking of the proton. The K/sup )/p pi /sup +/ Dalitz plot exhibits an increasing density of events with increasing pion energy. The one pion exchange model (OPE) gives an adequate description of the forward-backward peaking effects of the K/sup +/p pi /sup -/ events, but the K/sup O/p pi /sup +/ data coul d not be interpreted as a single dominant process. For this reason, two amplitudes in a mixed isotopic spin representatnon were chosen to fit the total cross sections and Dalitz plots. This mixed representation consists of: an OPE (T/sub K pi / = 1/2) amplitude to account for the OPE results of the K/sup +/ p pi events; and a non-OPE (T/sub pi N/ =3/2) amplitude to account for the expected resonance effects of the pi /sup +/p state, respectively. The qualitative agreement with the Dalitz plots and the good fit to the total cross sections indicate that these two amplitudes dominate the reactions. (TCO)
