CHANGES IN PERMEABILITY OF CELLS IN ALLIUM CEPA L. FOLLOWING X-RAY IRRADIATION (in German)
The effects of various doses of x-ray irradiation (1000, 5000, and 25,000 r) on the permeability of plasmatic cell membranes in epidermal cells of Allium cepa L., variety Vsetaty seedling, were studied by means of the plasmolytic method. The following solutions were used as plasmolytics: 1 and 0.64M KNO/sub 3/ and 1M saccharose, pH 5. A total of 2149 measurements were made. The plasmolytic method refined by time evaluation of the onset of the plasmolytic forms, border, concave-convex, and complete (convex-) plasmolysis, was found to be applicable for the determination of early radiation damage to cell permeability and can be developed to a suitable testing method of the effect of ionizing radiation. Only the first form, border plasmolysis, could not discover the noxious changes caused by irradiation as its course was of too short duration. Duration of complete plasmolysis was prolonged if KNO/sub 3/ was used as plasmolytic and became shorter or remained closely below the control level if saccharose was used in plasmolysis. This fact was not affected by the radiation dose. Irradiation with x rays considerably changed the permeability of plasmatic cell membranes for water and electrolytes, not however for nonelectrolytes. The observed effect may perhaps be explained by partial depolarization of membranes under the influence of irradiation, which makes possible an easier permeation of electrically charged particles while electroneutral particles are not essentially influenced in their permeation.
