Basic studies of atomic dynamics. Progress report, October 1, 1975--September 30, 1976. [Summaries of research activities at Univ. Chicago]
Research activities during the period Oct. 1, 1975 to Sept. 30, 1976 are described. Areas include: post-adiabatic approximation; other studies of two-electron excitations; ionization by electron collision; properties of highly stripped ions; angular distribution of collision products; application of atomic points of view to crystalline and molecular phenomena; interaction of electrons with polar molecules; and line profiles and threshold intensities. Basic studies of atomic dynamics. Progress report for period October 1, 1977--September 30, 1978. [Summaries of research activities at University of Chicago]
Novel and unexpected progress was achieved this year on the interaction of an electron with a polar molecule, by introducing an adiabatic procedure of progressive frame transformation whose adiabatic channels are determined by solving a two-variable non-separable problem. This success and the requirements of other tasks have increased interest in unraveling the significance of approximations based on separability of variables and adiabaticity whose success keeps exceeding expectations. Efforts in this direction are just beginning. Promising progress has also been achieved in calculations of a pair of correlated electrons in the field of an ion rather than of a bare nucleus.more » -
Basic studies of atomic dynamics. Progress report, October 1, 1972-- September 30, 1973
Several lines of research, mostly interrelated, were advanced this year. The study of the prototype two-electron program was restarted. Further applications of the quantum defect and frame transformation methods were extensive, analyzing and interrelating spectral and collision parameters of Ar, Xe, Al and of the alkaline earths. A new method for R matrix calculations was developed and tested for Ar. This method is being adapted to a cellular approach to molecular and crystal problems. A list of publications is included. Basic studies of atomic dynamics. Progress report, October 1, 1979-September 30, 1980. [Univ. of Chicago]
Potential ridges, now identified as the locus of breakdown of approximate separability of coordinates, require a special physico-mathematical treatment the initial phase of which has now been completed. The role of a potential ridge in separating the pair of exit channels of lower-energy two-electron excitations is circumscribed and hence accessible to numerical calculations; it has thus been studied in some detail for earth-alkaline-like configurations and for He/sup -/. Quantum defect theory approaches have been extended to molecular predissociation and to the study of Stark effect wave-functions; these extensions have now proved so far from the origins of the approach thatmore »
