Title: RADIATION-INDUCED GIANT CELLS. THE EFFECT OF HALOGENATED THYMIDINE ANALOGUES AND AET

Abstract

The effect of the radiosensitizers 5-bronrdeoxyuridine, 5- iododeoxyuridine, and of the protective substance aminoethylisothiouronium on the development of giant cells in tissue culture was studied in quantitative conditions. Both the thymidine analogues, when added to the culture medium, cause a 50 per cent increase in the size of cultured cells. The same increase in size was observed in cells cultured with these analogoues for 24 and 48 hours. None of the above analogues exhibits a potentrating or a summation effect on the increase in cell size following irradiation with a dose of 1200 r, irrespective of incubation time. AET appears effective, influencing the development of giant cells following irradiation with doses ranging between 1200 and 3000 r. The irradiated cells reach a smaller size following irradiation if AET is present in the culture flask in the time of irradiation. (auth)
