Abstract

A process is given for improving the precipitation of strontium from an aqueous phosphoric-acid-containing solution with nickel or cobalt ferrocyanide by simultaneously precipitating strontium or calcium phosphate. This is accomplished by adding to the ferrocyanide-containing solution calcium or strontium nitrate in a quantity to yield a concentration of from 0.004 to 0.03 and adjusting the pH of the solution to a value of above 8.

A rapid liquid ion exchange method is described for separating quantities of calcium from strontium in dilute acid solution. Separate extractions were made with di-2ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (HDEHP) dissolved in toluene after stepwise pH adjustments of the aqueous solution. Calcium, strontium, and other cations in 250 ml of milk were first concentrated in 60 ml of dilute HCl solution by a batch ion exchange resin technique. After separation of calcium and radiostrontium by the liquid ion exchange method, Sr/sup 89/ and Sr/sup 90/ were stripped from the final organic phase with 3N HNV/sub 3/ and precipitated from fuming nitric acid.more »« less

A chemical flowsheet is proposed for recovery of strontium and rare earths from Purex wastes. The iron in the waste is first complexed with tartrate and the pH is adjusted with caustic. Strontium and rare earths are extracted by a solvent comprised of d1(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric - sodium di(2- ethylhexyl) phosphate - tributyl phosphate-Amsco 125-82 and stripped with nitric acid. First, the plutonium and fission products are coprecipitated on a bismuth phosphate carrier. The precipitate obtained is dissolved, and the plutonium in the solution is oxidized to the hexavalent state (with ceric nitrate, potassium dichromate, Pb/ sub 3/O/sub 4/, sodium bismuthate and/or potassium dichromate). METHOD OF RECOVERING PLUTONIUM VALUES FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS BY CARRIER PRECIPITATION

A process is presented for pretreating aqueous nitric acid- plutonium solutions containing a small quantity of hydrazine that has formed as a decomposition product during the dissolution of neutron-bombarded uranium in nitric acid and that impairs the precipitation of plutonium on bismuth phosphate. The solution is digested with alkali metal dichromate or potassium permanganate at between 75 and 100 deg C; sulfuric acid at approximately 75 deg C and sodium nitrate, oxaiic acid plus manganous nitrate, or hydroxylamine are added to the solution to secure the plutonium in the tetravalent state and make it suitable for precipitation on BiPO/sub 4/.
