The parallel virtual machine (PVM) is a freely available software package developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee that permits a heterogeneous collection of computers, from laptops to Crays, hooked together by a network to be used as a single large parallel computer. The software enables users to exploit their existing computer hardware to solve much larger problems at minimal additional cost. With thousands of users, PVM has become the de facto standard for distributed computing worldwide.
