ELECTRON SPIN RESONANCE IN IRRADIATED SINGLE CRYSTALS OF BETAINE HYDROCHLORIDE
Radicals trapped in electron-irradiated single crystals of betaine hydrochloride, (CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/N/sup +/ CH/sub 2/COO/sup -/, were s tudied. Irradiation was carried out at room temperature with 1 Mev electrons. The dosages ranged from 1 to 5 Mrad and had no apparent effect on the nature of the free radicals formed in betaine. The spectrum along the a axis consists of 30 lines, respectively, 10 x 3 lines. The first splitting in 10 equally spaced lines of nearly binominal intensity is due to the interaction between the unpaired electron and the nine protons of the methyl groups in betaine radical. Each of these lines is split in a triplet of nearly the same intensity due to the interaction between the unpaired electron and the N/sup 14/ nucleus. The radical in irradiated betaine was identified as /sup +/N(CH/sub 3/)/sub 3/. Evidence is given to indicate that the radical must be planar. (P.C.H.)
