Title: SUMMARY TECHNICAL REPORT ON FEED MATERIALS FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER 1, 1963- DECEMBER 31, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4115020

Improvement of Production Furnace Induction Coil Assembly. An improved induction coil assembly was developed for the vacuum furnaces in which uranium is remelted and cast into ingots. More than 350 ingots have been cast in two furnaces fitted with the improved assemblies. No arcing between coil turns has been observed, and the higher thermal efficiency of the improved coil assemblies has made it possible to reduce the furnace power cycle. Vacuum Remelt Recovery of Ingot Crops. Uranium ingot crops, after being pickled in nitric acid and vacuumremelted, were used as feed for the ingot casting operation. Fuel cores fabricated from ingots produced entirely from remelted ingot-crop metal were equal in quality to cores from ingots produced from conventional remelt charges. Measuring Remelt Pour Temperatures By Use of an Infrared Radiation Pyrometer. The pyrometer was used to control the furnace cycle for a test program in which eleven 1270-lb ingots were cast. The pyrometer was sighted on the crucible pour plug and then on the uranium pour stream as the ingot was cast. Multiple Beta Heat Treatment of HAPO Hollow Fuel Core Blanks. A study was made of the effects of multiple alpha-to-betato-alpha phase transformations on the dimensional stability of uranium fuel core blanks. After 1 to 30 cycles, although the core blanks underwent an increase in length and a decrease in diameter, no internal voids were produced. Induction Heat Treating of Hanford Hollow Fuel Cores. A large quantity of HAPO hollow cores was successfully beta heat treated by electrical induction and quenched in oil. The grain sizes and structures of these cores were finer and more uniform, respectively, from core to core than those of salt-heated, oil-quenched cores. The Electrochemical Machining of Uranium. An off-site test was conducted to investigate the feasibility of machining uranium by electrochemical means. (D.L.C.)
