The ferrosulfate dosimetry method is widely used with glass equipment; however, use of glassware is often impossible in radiation chemistry investigations involving the determination of the absorbed energy. An attempt was therefore made to adapt the method for use with stainless steel containers. The 0.8N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ used as dosimetric solution dissolves the steel and thus distorts the results; however, a pretreatment of the steel with hot, 96% HNO/ sub 3/ passivates the surface so that even subsequent exposure to gamma radiation does not activate it. The ferrosulfate solution may be kept for a whole month without attacking the container. (TTT)
