Abstract

A description is given of a 20-foot-OD, 16-foot-ID spherical concrete shell, prestressed, with an outer steel skin, which was designed to serve as a container for explosions. This 20-foot containment vessel. which has not been built, is described in Part I. Design specifications and reproductions of the original engineering drawings are also given. Part II describes a quarter-scale model of the vessel, which was built and tested to destruction with high explosives. Results of the tests are described, and details are given. (auth)

A 5-ft-OD, 4-ft-ID concrete spherical shell with a 1/16in.-thick inside steel shell and a 1/8-in.-thick outside steel skin, was designed and tested for containment of explosions. The prestressing was obtained by making the outside steel skin of twelve flanged pentagons which were bolted together. Results are reported of tests with up to 3.25 lb high explosives; at this weight, the seams started to break but the failure was not catastrophic. The peak residual hot gas pressure was 209 psi for 3.25 lb explosive. The extension of the data to a 20-ft- OD, 16-ft-ID structure is discussed. (D.L.C.)
