Deformation of Graphite by Thermal Cycling

The dimensional changes that occur when graphite specimens are thermally cycled under constant torque were measured. It is shown that internal stresses due to the anisotropic thermal expansion of individual component crystallites cause strain increments to appear that are a function of the temperature change -- - not of the absolute temperature. A model used to describe the stress-strain relation of graphite at constant temperature is extended to describe this new phenomenon in terms of a change in intermal stress distribution with change in temperature.
