THE MEASUREMENT OF BETA DOSE AND THE CALIBRATION OF SOME BETA-GAMMA SURVEY INSTRUMENTS
An extrapolation ionization chamber was constructed and used to measure the dose rate from sources of the pure beta emitters Tl/sup 204/, P/sup 32/ and Y/ sup 90/ at a number of distances in air. The sources were then used to determine the response per unit dose rate for four survey instruments, which although primarily intended for gamma ray measurement have facilities for indicating beta dose rate4 Calibration curves are given that will enable interpretation of the readings in a number of conditions. The commonly used Type 1349A has serious limitations, but satisfactory results may be obtained with the hot spot monitor Type 1657A and the beta sensitive quartz fibre electroscope Type 1376A. When great sensitivity is required the Type 1320A G.M. probe can be used, provided the beta energy is known. The variation of dose rate with distance from the sources used is in good agreement with that of other observers. (auth)
