X-RAY STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE OF LIQUID METALS AND ALLOYS. Annual Progress Report
Three different x-ray diffraction methods are investigated for studying structure of liquid metals. Methods evaluated are: non-focusing method with stationary x-ray beam irradiating the open surface of a stationary liquid sample, focusing method with theta -motion of the liquid sample covered with a suitable material, and focusing method with stationary x-ray beam irradiating the open surface of a stationary liquid sample. The application of computer methods to the analysis of x-ray scattering from liquid metals is discussed. The properties of liquid copper, silver, tin, and mercury as determined by x-ray diffraction are summarized. Atomic distribution in molten silver--tin alloys is reported. (N.W.R.)
