URANIUM-ALUMINUM ALLOY, CONTAINING SILICON FOR FUEL ELEMENTS
The manufacture of canned fuel elements with a core of U - Al alloy offers considerable difficulties when the uranium concentration in the alloy exceeds 25% by weight. These difficulties (e.g., "dog-boning") are due to the formation of UAl/sub 4/. The formation of UAl/sub 4/ can be substantially suppressed by incorporating in the alloy Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Sn, Pb, In, TI, Fe, Nb, or Ga, the first five and especially Si being preferred. Starting with an alloy mix consisting of 3.5 to 10 at.% uranium and 0.5 to 20 at.% additive, preferably 5 at.% silicon the balance being aluminum, fuel alloys may be obtained which consist substantially of aluminum and UAl/sub 3/, preferred composition containing 9.4 at.% uranium and 65% by weight UAl/sub 3/.
