Application of high-frequency ventilation to treatment of chemical-warfare casualties: Animal and theoretical studies. Annual report, 1 March 1984-28 February 1985
The objectives of work done during the reporting period were: to determine whether dogs given 2 LD50 of soman could be resuscitated with a treatment protocol consisting of transtracheal jet ventilation and atropine administration; to determine the changes in arterial blood gas composition occurring during transtracheal jet ventilation following soman administration; to determine the soman-induced changes in lung and airway properties that cause the observed changes in arterial blood gas composition; to determine the changes in systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics following soman administration; and to investigate some of the changes in autonomic function that may be responsible for the observedmore » -
Simulation of chemical kinetics in turbulent natural gas combustion. Volume 2. Experimental studies of nitric oxide production in gas flames. Annual report, September 1993-June 1994
One major focus of the work during the report was the design, fabrication, and installation of the necessary apparatus to conduct an investigation of jet flames in a crossflow. A second focus was a parametric investigation of precessing jet flames in an unconfined, quiescent ambient. Parameters varied include nozzle diameter, jet deflection angle, initial jet velocity (Reynolds number), dimensionless precession frequency (Strouhal number), and fuel type. The overall objective of this study is to provide an increased understanding of the combined effects of fluid mechanics and chemical kinetics in the production and emission of oxides of nitrogen from gas-burning combustionmore » -
I. INFLUENCE OF TOTAL-BODY X-RAYS ON THE KINETICS OF ERYTHROCYTE ENZYMES AS A BIOLOGICAL DOSIMETER. II. BIO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF THE RAT BRAIN. Annual Progress Report III, June 1, 1962 to MaY 31, 1963
An internal x ray dosimeter was found in a rat erythrocyte enzyme, nucleoside phosphorylase. At all total-body x ray doses tested from 100 to 1000 r, this enzyme was inhibited but the rate of inhibition was closely similar for the 250, 500, 750, and 1000 r in the postirradiation interval from 0 to 48 hr. However, the time and degree of recovery of enzyme activity postirradiation were dose dependent. Thus, complete recovery after 100 r was in 116 hr, after 250 r in 155 hr, and after 500 r in 221 hr. With a 750-r dose only partial recovery ofmore »
