Silylene-31Si adds to 1,3-butadiene to give silacyclopent-3-ene- 31Si. Studies using nitric oxide as a scavenger demonstrate that the reacting silylene is present as 80 percent triplet and 20 percent singlet, while studies using neon as a moderator prove that the ground electronic state of silylene is a singlet.
