In identifying the optimal performance of an advanced experiment such as Ignitor presently known constraints on the plasma paramenters that can be achieved are taken into account. These constraints are mutually linked. In particular, Ignitor can operate well within the known limitations for the particle density and the plasma pressure (beta limit). Detailed simulations of the plasma current ramp up and of plasma heating to ignition have been carried out. These are consistent with the engineering constraints of the machine design. Although the Guideway may be the most expensive component of a MAGLEV system, the importance of a suitable magnet system should not be underestimated. The reliability of operation of MAGLEV depends on the superconducting magnets performing to their specifications in a reliable manner (i.e., without training or quenching). Besides reliability the magnets should produce high field, be sufficiently stable to withstand reasonable perturbations, be light weight, be protected in the event of a quench, and be economical (although performance should outweigh cost). Analytical studies of advanced high-field designs: 20-tesla large-bore superconducting magnets

Several emerging technologies have been combined in a conceptual design study demonstrating the feasibility of producing ultrahigh magnetic fields from large-bore superconducting solenoid magnets. Several designs have been produced that approach peak fields of 20-T in 2.0-m diameter inner bores. The analytical expressions comprising the main features of CONDUCTOR and ADVMAGNET, the two computer programs used in the design of these advanced magnets, are also discussed. These magnets and design techniques will make a paramount contribution to the national mirror-fusion endeavor and to the newly emerging field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) whole-body scanners.

Neutron Spectroscopy has provided critical information on the magnetism in correlated electron systems. Specifically quantum magnets, superconductors, and multi-ferroics are areas of productive research. A discussion of recent measurements on the SEQUOIA spectrometer will provide examples of how novel instrumentation concepts are used on the latest generation of spectrometers to extend our knowledge in such systems. The now ubiquitous function of sample rotation allows for full mapping of volumes of $$Q$$ and $$\omega$$ space. The emergency and growth of high-field superconductivity since the 1960's was greatly enhanced by demonstrations in many 10 - 17 T magnets, that Niobium-Tin (Nb{sub 3}Sn) could be used most reliably in magnets utilizing Nb{sub 3}Sn in a flexible tape type superconductor form. It was always recognized that if Nb{sub 3}Sn were readily available in wire or cable form, that might allow design and fabrication of Nb{sub 3}Sn magnets exhibiting better overall performance, more readily available and comparable to lower field Niobium-Titanium (Nb-Ti) magnets.
