OSTI ID:4056643
A process for the recovery of fissionable or fertile constituents from used or spent nuclear fuel elements of the solid type is described. The fuel elements consist of uranium, plutonium, thorium or mixtures thereof, and metallic material of zirconium, hafnium, titanium, or their alloys. The process consists of immersing the fuel element in a solution of ammonium fluoride, and dissolving at least a part of the fuel element therein. The concentration of the ammonium fluoride is from 1O to 50% and is maintained between 25 deg C and the boiling point of the solution. Ammonium bifluoride may be used for the process. A diagram of the process is given. (N.W.R.)
