On the density field description of a boson system

The introduction of a density description through a field approach is discussed. Additional mathematical complications resulting from the appearance of powers of theδ-function can be avoided by means of a limiting process. The configuration space argument of Bogolubov and Zubarev is cast in anx-space form in which simple expressions are given. In the resulting representation the normalisation integral is defined by means of a weight function the expression of which is determined. The weight function establishes the connection between the rather different expressions of the two density field representations. Some simple cases are considered and a variational principle is formulated.
