Title: A METHOD OF DETERMINING THE PHYSICAL STRENGTH OF ION EXCHANGE RESIN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4054763

A method has been developed which allows the determination of the physical strength of ion exchange resin. The resin sample is tested by selecting an aliquot of beads. Each bead is tested and the measurements obtained are programmed under the code name Squash'' on the IBM 7090 computer. The results are analyzed statistically giving the following data: (1) The size of the bead to the nearest 0.005 mm. (2) The total force, to the nearest gram, required to rupture the bead. (3) The deformation, to the nearest 0.005 mm, the bead underwent prior to rupture. (4) The force/unit area (grams/mm/sup 2/) required to rupture the bead. The reproducibility of the method was checked by selecting three sets of 20 beads from the same sample, and determining only the force required to rupture the beads. The beads were selected for soundness and were all approximately the same size. The statistical analyses of these runs show a variance of the mean values of less than 1.0%. For the worst case, the precision of the mean at the 95% S.L. shows a maximum variance of less than 10.0%. The practicability of the method was checked by comparing Permutit-SK resin before and after irradiation in a /sup 60/Co source. A comparison of the results obtained shows that the method will readily detect the physical damage caused by 1.48 x 10/sup 8/ r gamma radiation. In the case cited, the force required to rupture the beads exposed to radiation had decreased 25% from their normal value. With this type of data resin samples can be compared to previous samples of the same type to ascertain relative physical qualities of the resin prior to use. One can correlate length of service to physical strength and determine remaining life of resin in use. One can also determine what effects such variables as radiation, chemical treatment, time in the pushed bed unit, etc. have on the physical characteristics of the resin. (auth)
