Title: INFLUENCE OF URANIUM ADDITIONS ON IRON AND STEEL. I. URANIUM ADDITIONS TO LOWCARBON STEELS (in Japanese)

The effect of uranlum additions of 0.06 --0.3% upon 0.05-0.37% plain carbon steels was investigated Al was used as a deoxidant, and the recovery of U was less than 40% when the amount of Al added was small, but increased with C content in the case of metallic uranium. The U additions appeared to refine the austenite grain. Nonmetallic inclusions were found in the steel; no conclusions were drawn as to segregation because of the small size of the ingots. After annealing, U-containing steels lost their purely ferritic grain structure with precipitation of a carbide believed to be UC. The amount of carbide increased with increasing U. Temperature tests showed that only a small amount of U goes into solid solution in the high-temperature austenite range. As far as solubility in the ferrite area is concerned, no change was found in the hardness and structure and no precipitation was observed. No improvement in hardenability was found at 870 deg C with uranium additions. No effects were found on tensile strength and notch impact strength. (Uranium Abstr., 3: March 1964)
