FUNDAMENTAL METALLURGICAL STUDIES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF METALLIC URANIUM FUEL ELEMENTS
The problem of improving metallic uranium fuel elements, to obtain better fuel cycle economy, has been confronted in the SNAM-LRSR laboratories. To this purpose, particularly regarding the development of fuel elements for Latina type and advanced graphite-moderated, gas-cooled reactors, much work of a technological nature as well as the necessary related fundamental research has been carried out. This paper reviews the results deriving from the two different subjects upon which the greater part of the fundamental research effort has been spent. The first part of the paper concerns the study of uranium-rich niobium alloys while the second part, investigated in collaboration with the Metallurgical Department of CCR Ispra (Euratom), deals with the indirect bonding between the uranium fuel and the Magnor Al 80 can.
