Title: REMOTELY OPERATED MANIPULATOR

Abstract

A manipulator is described for performing, within an entirely enclosed cell containling radioactive materials, various mechanical operations. A rod with flexible fingers is encompassed by a tubular sleeve shorter than the rod. Relative movement between the rod and sleeve causes the fingers to open and close. This relative movement is effected by relative movement of permanent magnets in magnetic coupling relation to magnetic followers affixed to the ends of the rod and sleeve. The rod and its sleeve may be moved as a unit axially or may be rotated by means of the magnetic couplings. The manipulator is enclosed within a tubular member which is flexibly sealed to an opening in the cell. (AEC)

  • A remote-control manipulator for handling contaminated material is described. The manipulator consists of a handle mounted in universal suspension on a housing at one end of a supporting tube, wherein the supporting tube is mounted in and passes through a ball joint, which is carried in a protective wall of a contaminated space. The handle and the operating member are disposed without and within the space respectively. The handle carries a plate which is in contact with at least three pins, slidably mounted in the housing. The pins are in pressure contact through hydraulic means with the same number ofmore » additional pins which are slidably mounted in an additional housing and which are in contact with an additional plate carried by an operating member mounted in universal suspension on the additional housing at the other end of the supporting tube.   • Remotely-controlled manipulator carrier systems are used in large-area hot cells such as a facility for reprocessing irradiated nuclear fuel materials. The system is used to perform manual-like operations on the process equipment in the hot cell which is disposed in racks along two longitudinally extending walls of the hot cell enclosure, the racks being filled with process equipment and defining a passageway in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the enclosure. The system includes a vertical guide column which is connected to the bridge beam of an overhead bridge crane. A support is mounted on the guide column formore » movement up and down the column. An extendible arm is cantilever-mounted on the support and has a manipulator or other remotely-controlled apparatus at its outer end. the extendible arm is to be subjected to a minimal bending moment when work is done in the racks containing the process equipment. For this purpose, the guide column is mounted at its respective ends between rotating upper and lower plates aligned to rotate about a common vertical rotational axis. The upper plate is rotatably mounted on the bridge beam; whereas, the lower plate is rotatably mounted on a base platform movable along a track on the passageway. The guide column is arranged between the upper and lower plates so as to be eccentric with respect to the vertical rotational axis whereby the guide column is movable, with the rotation of the upper and lower plates, to the racks on the left side of the passageway or to the racks on the right side thereof, as desired, and into proximity to the process equipment thereby reducing the distance to which the extendible arm has to be extended to permit work on the process equipment.« less
  • BS>A power-operated manipulator is designed for remote handling of large loads on the order of one ton. The manipulator comprises a carriage movable along a longitudinal track and a cross trolley movable along a transverse track carried by the carriage, the trolley supporting a vertical telescopic arm.   • An apparatus for remotely assembling and disassembling a Graylock type coctor between a pipe and a closure for the pipe includes a base and a receptacle on the base for the closure. The pipe is moved into position vertically above the closure by a suitable positioning device such that the flange on the pipe is immediately adjacent and concentric with the flange on the closure. A moving device then moves two semicircular collars from a position free of the closure to a position such that the interior cam groove of each collar contacts the two flanges. Finally, a tensioning devicemore » automatically allows remote tightening and loosening of a nut and bolt assembly on each side of the collar to cause a seal ring located between the flanges to be compressed and to seal the closure. Release of the pipe and the connector is accomplished in the reverse order. Preferably, the nut and bolt assembly includes an elongate shaft portion on which a removable sleeve is located.« less
  • A completely submersible, remotely operated underwater suction device for collection of irradiated materials in a nuclear pool is disclosed. The device includes a pump means for pumping water through the device, a filter means for capturing irradiated debris, remotely operated releasable connector means, a collection means and a means for remotely maneuvering the collection means. The components of the suction device may be changed and replaced underwater to take advantage of the excellent radiation shielding ability of water to thereby minimize exposure of personnel to radiation.
