Title: AIR RADIOACTIVITY MONITOR

Abstract

The monitor is designed to minimize undesirable background buildup. It consists of an elongated column containing peripheral electrodes in a central portion of the column, and conduits directing an axial flow of radioactively contaminated air through the center of the column and pure air through the annular portion of the column about the electrodes. (AEC)

  • A radioactivity monitor for monitoring the effluent from coolant tubes of a nuclear reacter is described. There is a first detecter adapted to detect radioactivity from all the tubes. Then there is a valve means adapted to cause the effluent from each coolant tube to flow through a sample pot individual to the coolant tube. When the radioactivity rises to a predetermined level in the first detector, a second detector scans and indicates the radioactivity of each sample pot therefore giving the effluent from each coolant tube. The second detectcr is shielded and rotates automatically when the predetermined level ismore » reached. The sample pots are arranged in a circle around the second detector. A layout of the monitoring system is shown. (N.W.R.)« less
  • In the patent 1,094,378 a shallow plane proportional counter for measuring very low alpha and beta activities of fluid media is given, which consists of a drum-like housing and of parallel spaced planiform grid electrodes located within the said housing and covering the section of the housing. When monitoring the radioactivity of water, it is desirable to perform the measurement of the gamma activity in addition to and simultaneously with the measurement of the alpha and beta activities. For this purpose, it is proposed to locate a scintillation crystal beneath the proportional counter adjacent to the sample holder. The scintillationmore » crystal is pant of a gamma counter which is switched in anti-coincidence with the proportional counter so that the effect of the background radiation can be reduced. • There is described an apparatus and method for diagnosing ocular cancer that is both non-invasive and accurate which comprises two radiation detectors positioned before each of the patient's eyes which will measure the radiation level produced in each eye after the administration of a tumor-localizing radiopharmaceutical such as gallium-67.
