Problems with the use of a CMMS in coal handling plant maintenance

This paper presents the results of a study into the use of a mature CMMS in the planning and execution of maintenance in a coal handling plant which supports a base load power station. Despite the investment in system development, computer support and training of the personnel, a number of serious problems were identified such as the management of backlogs of work, the effective allocation of resources in the field and the use made of plant history. The problems are discussed in terms of the fundamental maintenance theory being developed at the University of New South Wales.
