FLUOROCARBON N-F COMPOUNDS. Quarterly Technical Report No. 7
Perfluoropentadiene-1,4 failed to react with NF/sub 3/; however, it was found that this diene was isomerized by cesium fluoride, over a wide temperature range, to perfluoropentyne-2. The pentyne could be polymerized by gamma irradiation. A study was made of the isomerization of C/sub 5/F/sub 8/ isomers over selected cathlysts. Interrelationships were established for the fluorocarbons pentyne-2, 1-methylcyclobutene, 3-methylcyc lobutene, cyclopentene, pentadiene-1,3 and pentadiene-1,4. Both CF/sub 3/CF = CF/sub 2/ and CF/sub 3/N = CF/sub 2/ were found at least to dimerize over cesium fluoride. The propylene dimers are thought to have the structures (CF/sub 3/)/sub 2/C = C(CF/sub 3/)/sub 2/ and (CF/sub 3/)/sub 2/CFCF = CFCF/sub 3/. Refinite indications of the successful synthesis of a fluorocarbon diacyldiimide, CF/sub 3/CON = NCOCF/sub 3/ , have been obtained. The compound is rather unstable even at room temperature, and as anticipated, gives C/sub 2/F/sub 6/ on thermal decomposition. Triamides containing fluorocarbon groups . were made by reaction between N- bromoimides and acyl halides, in yields ranging from very poor to good. Compounds with three small perfluo-roacyl groups apparently cannot be made by this method. The reaction between acyl halides and (CF/sub 3/)/sub 2/N)/sub 2/ Hg, on the other hand, gives amides of the structure RCON(CF/sub 3/)/sub 2/ in good yield with all acyl halides tested except phosgene. Tetrakis- (trifluoroacetyl) hydrazine on heating to 300 deg is converted to 3,5- bis(trifluoromethyl)oxadiazole, plus trifluoroacetic anhydride. (auth)
