The energy density of a system of fermion fields interacting with scalar and pseudoscalar fields in the presence of an external source linearly coupled to the scalar field is calculated. This is done by expanding the energy density in a sum of loop diagrams. The quantity computed is of direct interest for the study of the possible existence of abnormal nuclear states, first hypothesized by Lee and Wick. It may also be of relevance to other outstanding problems in hadron physics. The calculation is done within the context of a theory which exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking at the tree level. The method used is designed with the goal in mind of retaining in the final answer the symmetry originally present in the Lagrangian density L, and explicitly shows how to avoid the infrared difficulties associated with the presence of a massless fermion field in L.
