Procurement of type 316 stainless steel reference heat for LMFBR Research and Development Programs
Abstract
Various sizes of plate, sheet, pipe, rounds, and forgings were produced from a 200-ton air-melted heat of type 316 stainless steel, heat 8092297, made by the Republic Steel Corporation. These items were procured by the Union Carbide Nuclear Division and are stockpiled at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for disbursement as reference material to ERDA contractors responsible for research and development associated with the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor Program. This reference material is characterized by singular control of chemical composition; specific traceability of items to each ingot cast; and of the highest quality complying with the requirements of the RDT Standard F 2-4T, Quality Verification Requirements, and the RDT material standards. The considerations involved in establishing specification requirements for this reference material are presented and the procurement specification ORNL-MC-316 appended. Processing and inspection activities are described, and traceability of each item to the ingot cast is presented in detail. The specific results obtained as verification of the chemical composition and the mechanical properties are listed for each size of item procured.

A steam generator, wherein the boiler, steam drum, and superheater are integrated into one single unit, requires the welding of a transition joint between the 2 1/4% Cr-1% Mo steel of the steam drum and the type 316 stainless steel of the superheater. A practicable procedure was developed for the welding of this transition joint and the properties of the weld were evaluated by mechanical testing and metallurgical evaluation. After evaluating the technical aspects of the project and their relation to the fabrication of the generator, it was considered desirable to overlay the welding edge of the 2 1/4% Cr-1%more »

CATASTROPHIC OXIDATION: WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO TYPE 316 STAINLESS STEEL
The combined results of a literature survey, a study of CANEL elevated temperature applications of the alloy, and CANEL and other experimentation and experience led to the conclusion that catastrophic oxidation of Type 316 stainless steel will not occur under ordinary, clean, service conditions to be expected in CANEL applications. It must be emphasized, however, that stainless steel of either the ferritic or austenitic types will oxidize very rapidly in the presence of certain contaminants. This is particularly true under conditions of restricted air flow. It is most important, therefore, to insure that stainless steel systems, subjected to elevated temperaturesmore » -
Product form characterization of reference heat of type 316 stainless steels
Tensile properties and microstructure of specimens cold-worked from 0 to 30 percent and annealed for 0.5 hr at 1065 or 1150/sup 0/C were studied to explain differences observed in tensile properties of various product forms of type 316 stainless steel.
