Antiwear and EP characteristics of some rare earth fluorides as grease additives
- Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (China)
Lithium grease containing some rare earth fluorides such as LaF{sub 3}, CeF{sub 3}, PrF{sub 3}, NdF{sub 3}, GdF{sub 3} and a mixture of rare earth fluorides was prepared by means of mechanical mixing and milling. The extreme-pressure (EP) and antiwear (AW) properties of these greases were evaluated using a four-ball lubricant tester. The rubbed surface was analyzed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). The results show that NdF{sub 3} possesses good antiwear and EP properties. EPMA analysis indicates that a large amount of Nd and a small amount of F and O exists in the surface film. ESCA analysis shows neodymium or cerium fluoride decomposed under sliding and shearing to form neodymium or cerium oxyfluoride on the rubbing surface. 3 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
