Title: Integrating PV into commercial buildings aesthetically and cost effectively: A PV awning case study

Since August 1993, the North Carolina Solar Center has been participating in the national Photovoltaics for Utilities (PV4U) effort by convening its own state-based collaborative working group. This working group has had as its mission the development of PV applications in the utility sector. As part of that effort, a project was proposed to install a PV power system on a commercial building. The project was designed to address multiple issues both technical and policy-related. Technical issues included performance, power quality, electrical interconnection to the building, and system mounting. Policy-related issues included customer acceptance, aesthetics, ownership, and local code compliance. To address these different issues, the working group was divided into two groups to address each set of issues. As a result of the cooperation, a nine kilowatt PV system was conceived. The system is installed as an awning for North Carolina Power`s headquarters building in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. At the request of the technical subcommittee, the system configuration includes three electrically separate three kilowatt systems that are evenly distributed on the building`s 3-phase 120/208 Volt AC electrical service.
