Application of augmented spent fuel pool cooling
Abstract
Consumer Power Company`s Palisades Nuclear Plant entered commercial operation in 1971. The Palisades service water system design has required the system to be in operation, with few short duration exceptions, since initial plant start up. Through the years, maintenance on service water piping and valves preserved the design margins and kept the system operational. However, time and service water flow eventually resulted in the need to replace some service water system valves and two sections of service water piping. The valve and piping replacement was considered a major modification due to the complexity of the project and was planned for the 1995 refueling outage. The Palisades 1995 refueling outage included a full reactor core off load. Therefore, the spent fuel pool cooling was needed to remove considerable decay heat. The challenge was to replace the valves and piping in the safety-related service water system and at the same time maintain adequate and controlled cooling of the spent fuel pool. To accomplish this task, an augmented spent fuel pool cooling system was conceptualized and implemented for the 1995 refueling outage.
