Title: Electron-pair production in nucleon-nucleon and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 1-5 A GeV

Abstract

Collisions between relativistic nuclei offer the opportunity to study hadronic interactions in an excited multi-hadron environment. Electron pairs are produced by the interactions (bremsstrahlung, decays) of the particles (nucleons, mesons, resonances) that mediate the evolution of the system. They offer a particularly interesting probe since they have only a small final state interaction and thus provide direct information about their sources. Our original work showed the measurability of yields in p-Be and Ca-Ca collisions for energies as low as 1 A GeV, and gave a possible indication of pion annihilation in the nuclear medium. We have subsequently made systematic studies of the yields from p-p and p-d collisions at energies from 1-5 GeV and of the yields and associated multiplicities from d-Ca, {alpha}-Ca, Ca-Ca, and C-C collisions at 1 A GeV. Recent theoretical developments, model calculations and implications for future work will be discussed in the context of the results from these later data sets.
