Title: Observation of a geometrical resonance effect in Bi{sub {bold 2}}Sr{sub {bold 2}}CaCu{sub {bold 2}}O{sub {bold 8+}{ital x}} break junctions

Abstract

A periodic structure has been observed in the tunneling characteristics of Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8+{ital x}} break junctions. The observed structure is explained by the electron-hole interference effect in the surface layer, which produces a periodic structure in the tunneling characteristics. Good qualitative agreement has been obtained between measured data and calculated with Arnold{close_quote}s proximity model characteristics. The observed effect indicates an important role of the proximity effect on surface sensitive properties of high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}} superconductors, and explains the reported discrepancy of energy-gap values for Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8+{ital x}}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
